Born in southern Mexico to a Lebanese father and Mexican mother, Hayek dropped out of college to chase a dream of becoming an actress. And soon she would, first working with small theater companies and eventually landing jobs in commercials.
Hayek worked her way into roles of Mexican novelas, first acting in "Nuevo Amaneoer" and later snagging the title role on "Teresa," a wildly successful series that earned her a Novela Award (equivalent to an Emmy).
Hayek may have been one of Mexico's biggest stars, but she had another goal: Hollywood success. She packed up for Los Angeles in 1991 and upon arriving, immersed herself in acting and English lessons.
"When I was in Mexico, I had a good, stable acting career going," Hayek told Axcess magazine. "I had a very comfortable life. But I also had my instincts telling me to move on, to get out of here. Even though I had to start from the ground floor all over again in L.A., it was the right thing for me."
For her first Hollywood break, Hayek auditioned for the leading role in "Mi Vida Loca," a film about gang life in East Los Angeles. She didn't get the title role, but director Allison Anders cast her in a smaller part so that the newly Americanized actress could get her Screen Actors Guild card.
Hayek found roles in TV movies and bit parts in films, but her breakthrough came in "Desperado," the sequel to Robert Rodriguez's acclaimed "El Mariachi." Soon, she mesmerized audiences with a lascivious snake dance in another Rodriguez feature, "From Dusk Till Dawn." "I will be his slave," she said of Rodriguez to the Houston Chronicle, "because he believed in me when no one did."
Even before her first leading role in 1997's "Fools Rush In," co-starring Matthew Perry ("Friends"), the sultry starlet was already the toast of the Internet. And while critics blasted the rather bland film and lack of chemistry between the stars, it was the start of an ascent to Hollywood stardom with roles in "54," alongside Neve Campbell, and "Dogma" with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
Despite her Tinseltown success, Hayek hasn't forgotten about her audiences in Mexico, which loved her long before she was known as "the snake dance girl." To the Houston Chronicle, she commented, "(Mexican audiences) have seen me grow, so they relate to me in a more personal way. ... The American films I'm in are always No. 1 when they come to Mexico."
